How to get to us

New Zealand Trophy Hunting Park is located in the rural heartland of New Zealand’s picturesque South Island, set in a secluded valley that gives the feeling of being a world away.

We recommend you fly into Queenstown International Airport, from where we will arrange a transfer to the base of your choice. We also offer the option of transfer by helicopter, to start your adventure in style, while giving you the chance to take in some of the world’s most spectacular scenery.

Exclusive locations

Our red stag hunts take place at the New Zealand Trophy Hunting Park, located in the lower Hakataramea Valley.

Our free-range hunting for tahr and chamois takes place in the Southern Alps on privately owned land. We also have free range red stag and fallow buck hunts in Central Otago.

The central South Island is also the home of some of New Zealand’s very best trout fishing, in abundantly stocked lakes and rivers that offer a relaxing experience of some of the country’s most extraordinary environments. Adding a fishing expedition to your itinerary, means you don’t have to travel far – we even have a salmon spawning stream that runs through our property.

For visitors to the estate there is an incredible range of activities right on your doorstep in the Central Otago Lakes District.

  • Mountain animals - tahr: their capes are at their best from May to September. Their rut period is May to July during this time larger bulls are easier to locate as they join the nannies.

  • Stags - The red stags can be hunted from February to August. The red stag rut runs from mid-March to early May. Most deer species rut from March to May.

  • Duck season starts in May and runs until August.

What to bring

Clothing

The most important item to bring with you is a well ‘broken-in’ pair of mid-weight hiking boots. It is important to have boots with good ankle support and good edges on the sole. We use Meindl Boots, but there are many equivalent brands that will work well.

Our climate is changeable and appropriate clothing is essential. We recommend a layered clothing system to allow for temperature variances that you will experience during a day and a good breathable rain suit. See our recommended gear list.

Rifles

We recommend a rifle that fires a minimum 150-grain bullet. Popular calibres are 30/06, 7mm Mag, 300 WSM

Note: We have several good quality rifles available for rent should you not wish to travel with your own rifle.

 FAQs

  • Bringing firearms into New Zealand is a lengthy process, we advise starting your paperwork 8-10 months prior to travelling to New Zealand. In short, you need a New Zealand Police permit to bring firearms (including airguns) and ammunition into New Zealand. You must get the permit before they arrive in New Zealand and you must obtain a visitors firearm licence.

For more information please visit the Firearms Safety Authority website.

Alternatively, we have several good quality rifles available for rent should you not wish to travel with your own rifle.

  • Shots will vary from 90-275m (100-300 yards) so you should practice longer shots.

We use quality laser range finders to establish shooting distances.

  • We have had several bow hunters successfully take trophies in our privately owned hunting area and allows close stalking where required.

Expect bow shots from 15-50 yards.

  • All trophies are skinned in the field by your guide then preparation work is done by a local taxidermist, who will also arrange export documentation.

You can choose to have taxidermy work done in New Zealand by one of our recommended taxidermist. For more information give us a call.
